Chapter Fourteen

The sprint to his motorcycle gave Gina time to collect herself emotionally. The helmet’s mirrored visor hid her puffy eyes as they climbed aboard, and the night enveloped her wholly as they rocketed back through town.

Her mind raced with thanks for the day’s reunions and for the phone in her pocket, provided by Cruz. The sexy private investigator was becoming more of a hero with every action. His quiet confidence and easy smile had done more for her in a few days than any love interest ever had, and he probably didn’t have a clue. Because he wasn’t playing games. He didn’t have a side agenda or ulterior motive. Cruz Winchester was sincere and honorable in ways she’d forgotten men could be, and he’d irrevocably changed her ideas about what was acceptable. Never again would she accept any relationship that didn’t make her feel secure, seen and valued. Because if a man she’d just met could make her feel like this, then anyone seeking a position in her life permanently would have to bring a serious A game. Not just for her benefit, but for the life she would soon bring into this world.

The bike slowed at the final stoplight at the edge of town. Behind them, the area’s nightlife was in full swing. Before them, a quiet country road reached out to carry them home.

A shrill ringing rose from her pocket, barely audible through her helmet and over the sound of the motorcycle’s engine. Gina felt Cruz’s chest rumble as he chuckled in response.

“We didn’t get far,” he called.

Gina grinned as she liberated the new phone, then called back to Cruz. “Can I answer?” Her heart leaped, eager to hear her mom’s voice again, though it hadn’t been more than ten minutes since she’d last said goodbye.

Cruz pulled forward as the light changed and guided the motorcycle into an empty parking lot. He circled away from the security lights and traffic, then settled the engine so she could speak, unfettered by the sound.

She tugged her helmet off and pressed the phone to her ear. “Hello, Mama,” she said, brightly. “Everything okay?”

“We’re fine,” her mama said firmly, sounding as if she wasn’t actually sure. “It’s probably nothing...” The following pause stretched across their line, hollowing Gina with each impossibly long beat.

“Mama?” she pressed. “What’s wrong? Just say it.”

“The company monitoring our home security system called. We’ve had a break-in.”
